Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Nurturing Independence with the Right Support in Your Own Home

Safe and supported accommodation options to help you live more independently, with the care you need.

About This Service

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is designed for participants with higher support needs who want to live as independently as possible. Under SIL, individuals live in a shared home or their own home with others and receive regular, often 24/7, support to manage daily life.

The service includes help or supervision with daily tasks - for example, personal care or cooking meals - so that people can live safely at home while building skills. SIL is intended for those who need a significant amount of assistance around the clock (seven days a week, including overnight).

The help is paid personal support, tailored to each person’s preferences and goals. In practice, this means a dedicated team of support workers and coordinators works together to create a stable, home-like living environment focused on independence.

Examples of Support

Some examples included in this service would be:

  • 24/7 in-home assistance (including overnight support)

  • Choice of shared or individual living arrangements, arranged by participant preference

  • Support with personal care (bathing, grooming)

  • Meal preparation and household chores (cooking, cleaning)

  • Life-skill training (budgeting, cooking, personal hygiene)

  • Community and social engagement support is integrated into the daily routine

  • Coordinated care plans with the support coordinator to meet individual goals

What is Included?

In SIL, participants receive a fully supported living arrangement with continuous care. Each home is set up to be accessible and welcoming – participants usually have private bedrooms and shared living spaces, and staff make sure daily routines are accommodated.

Support workers assist with morning and evening routines, cook meals, help with laundry and cleaning, and encourage skill-building. For instance, a staff member might cook alongside a resident to teach them a recipe, or help a resident practice money management by budgeting for groceries.

All personal care is handled with dignity and encouragement. Importantly, SIL also includes planning for independence: support workers help participants access the community and engage in activities outside the home safely.

The end result is a living environment that feels like home, where each person’s independence and personal growth are actively promoted.
